Janmastami this year (2010) is Special!

Janmastami this year is very auspicious because in most parts of the world just by fasting until after the midnight festival and then taking EKadasi prasad one gets the benefit of the FULL fast.

Sanatana Goswami explains in Sri Hari Bhakti Vilasa that by fasting till the end of the astami tithi one gets half the benefit, and if one fasts till the end of the very auspicious Rohini/Moon conjunction one gets the FULL benefit, lots more love of Krishna!!

Usually the Rohini/Moon conjunction ends way into Srila Prabhupada's appearance day, making it difficult and impractical for most devotees to observe an additional fast at that time. But this year, in most parts of the world, both the tithi and the Rohini/Moon conjunction end BEFORE the end of the midnight Janmastami festival. This is rare.

So in this way devotees can relish more love of Krishna on Janmastami this year simply by fasting as usual till after the midnight Janmastami festival and then taking only Ekadasi prasada.

Next day is also a half-day fast for Srila Prabhupada's appearance. So to break the Janmastami fast one can take a little grain if one has taken Ekadasi prasad, or take just Ekadasi prasad if one fasted completely, and then fast a half day for Srila Prabhupada's appearance. Another option is that one can also keep fasting completely, if doing nirjala, till after Srila Prabhupada's festival because Srila Sanatana Goswami explains in Sri Hari Bhakti Vilasa that if one does not break a fast because of another immediate fast day there is no infringement of the break fast, or parana, rule.
