Onion and Garlic - Why to avoid

Onion and Garlic - Why to avoid

Postby admin » Wed Apr 08, 2009 9:07 pm

Q. Why should we avoid Onion to eat?

A. Onion and garlic come under the category of foods in the mode of passion and ignorance. Therefore, they cannot be offered to Krishna. They also have a foul smell, a sign of tamasic food.

There is also a Vedic reference: The Manu-smriti (5.5) says, lasunam caiva palandu abhaksyani—“Garlic and onions are unworthy of eating.”

Hare Krishna,

How can we avoid Onion and Garlic food, if only one person in a family wants to do so and remaining family members don't want? If it is not possible to avoid it, what can we do?
